Landfill Gas In Indonesia


Waste is one of the biggest problems in Indonesia. Every year, Local government has to spend much money to manage waste from people, distribute them to Final Disposal Area, and reduce waste by processing into composting fertilizer, recycling plastic and pulp paper.

Some countries have overcome this problem by converting waste into energy. There are several methods can be used to produce energy such as Landfill Gas,  Gasification, and Pyrolisis. On this occasion, I would like to explain about Landfill Gas Method.

Landfill Gas Method is a waste management scheme  where waste is collected in one location for long time. After having been collected , landfill will produce power since 1st year until 20 years later.

Main  gas composition produced by landfill consists of methane (50-55%) and carbondioxide (40-45%). As a matter of fact, composition which can be used as power fuel is methane. Carbondioxide could cause the mechanical problem if we produce power by using gas turbine. That’s why in term of producing electricity from landfill gas , we can only gas engine. Manufacturing company such General Eletric has produced proven technology which has been used in many countries to convert waste into power with brand ‘Jenbacher Engine’.
